Adopt a Road

• Be sure you are visible to motorists. Be prepared for any unexpected behavior by motorists. Never assume a driver sees you.
  
  

• Watch for unexpected developments in traffic.
  
  

• Walk facing on-coming traffic.
  
  

• Do not clean during peak traffic hours, in the evening or at night.
  
  

• Evaluate whether pick-up should be discontinued due to decreased visibility, inclement weather or unsafe traffic conditions.
  
  

• Stay clear of construction areas.
  
  

• Do not remove hazardous substances.
  
  

• Be alert for snakes and poisonous weeds.
  
  

• Stay clear of all construction areas or utility work zones.
  
  

• Do not go into roadways, woods or streams to remove litter.
  
  

• Do not wear headphones.
  
  

• Do not stand or jump on guardrails, drainage pipes, or concrete walls.
  
  

• Do not drink alcohol prior to or while participating in clean-up events.
  
  

• Avoid overexertion and heat-related problems by drinking water and taking breaks.
